MAKING DYING BETTER:
TOP TIPS FOR HCPs
(and everyone else)
SOLD OUT LIVE EVENT
RECORDINGS AVAILABLE NEXT WEEK
To quote Benjamin Franklin, “Nothing is certain except death and taxes”, and with none of us getting off this planet alive, the topic of this Saturday Symposium - Making Dying Better – is relevant to absolutely everyone.
With a fabulous line-up of speakers, and topics carefully chosen to be relevant to all healthcare practitioners (and with most of the talks also relevant to the general public), this unique virtual event has been designed to educate, inform, and inspire. After all, every one of us has a ball in the game when it comes to wanting to make dying better! #MAKINGDYINGBETTER

SYMPOSIUM ORGANISER
DR LINDA DYKES
Dr Linda Dykes is perhaps better known by her Twitter handle @DrLindaDykes, which she uses as a platform to educate healthcare professionals about the need to proactively open discussions with patients and their families about planning for the end of life - even when that does not seem to be within sight.
Dual-qualified in Emergency Medicine and General Practice, Linda is the UK’s first Consultant in Emergency & Interface Frailty Medicine, and a popular educator/speaker at medical and Emergency Medical Services conferences both nationally and internationally. Following the very recent death of her father, Linda was determined to run this event as planned, “because I want other’s people’s parents to have a good death too - and we all need to work together to achieve this goal”
The live event, with the speakers available for Q&As, will be held on Saturday March 11th 2023. If that doesn’t suit you, however, delegates purchasing a ticket can watch the recording at a later stage.
We would love to see international delegates joining us. The session on Patient Autonomy (and any other mention of the legal frameworks around capacity, consent, DNACPR status etc) will not be directly applicable outside the UK, but all the other sessions cover universal themes.

A phenomenally effective educator and story-teller, Kathryn will describe how Ordinary Ageing morphs into Ordinary Dying, weaving in advice about how to spot the key signals that indicate conversations and plans for the end of life cannot be postponed any longer… and how to approach these conversations.

What patients and families want to know: Feedback from the Compassion in Dying information Line (Part 1)
The questions asked by callers to Compassion in Dying’s Information Line give us a unique window into “What people want to know” – and what they sometimes aren’t being told by healthcare professionals, including GPs, hospital teams, District Nurses or paramedics. By sharing feedback from the Helpline, we hope that delegates will feel informed and empowered to either reflect upon their own clinical practice (HCPs), and/or be better equipped to plan for their own end of life, or that of friends and family.
10:15 AM
11.00
Patient Autonomy at the End of Life (including capacity, consent, Advanced Decisions and Powers of Attorney) (Part 2)
We already know that issues around Patient Autonomy at the End of Life (including capacity, consent, Advance Decisions and Powers of Attorney) can lead to sticking points in relations between patients, HCPs and event between clinical teams, so we felt these merited a dedicated session. For non-HCP delegates, this talk will give you an insight into ways you and your loved ones can retain some control into what happens in the event of your health and mind failing.
