Immediate Life Support Course ( Resuscitation Council UK )
The ILS course has been developed in order to standardise much of the in-hospital training undertaken already by Resuscitation Officers. Its aim is to train healthcare personnel in cardiopulmonary resuscitation, simple airway management and safe defibrillation (manual and/or AED), enabling them to manage patients in cardiac arrest until arrival of a cardiac arrest team and to participate as members of that team.
The course is run over one day and consists of lectures and practical stations. The manual is forwarded two weeks before the start of the course and the candidate is advised to study this thoroughly. Assessment on the course is continuous in nature and copies of the assessment forms should be forwarded to the candidate with their manual.
These cover the following subjects:
- Causes and prevention of cardiorespiratory arrest
- The ALS algorithm
- The ABCDE approach
- Initial resuscitation and defibrillation
- Airway (with optional LMA)
- Targeted training
There is one CASTeach demonstration. Emphasis is placed on managing patients until the arrival of the cardiac arrest team and on participating as members of that team.
This course accredited and certified by the Resuscitation Council UK and certificates will be issued.
