Cells: What Is Life?
by Chris Mulryan
This episode is the first in a series of podcasts on cells, the basic building blocks of human life. In this first episode @DrJenWaring and @ChrisMulryan consider the question “What is Life?” We endeavour to define life from a biological viewpoint by establishing the characteristics of living things.
To illustrate the distinction between life and death we contrast the human with a virus. Some of the complexities of determining the point at which life becomes extinct in a human are also considered in light of modern medical technologies that can produce a theoretical and conceptual blurring of the boundaries between life and death.
In subsequent episodes in this Cells Series we consider the structures of a cell, the cell cycle and mitosis, DNA as well as the biological organisation of the body.
