Learning from Excellence
Presented by Dr Emma Plunkett
Tuesday 26th June 2018 - 8PM
“Learning from Excellence” is an example of a positive reporting system, which was first introduced at Birmingham Children’s Hospital in 2014. This webinar will discuss the philosophy behind positive reporting systems; why we need them, how to set them up and how they can be used to improve the safety and quality of the work we do, as a complementary approach to traditional incident reporting systems. It will also consider how they might contribute to improving our workplace culture.
Emma is a consultant anaesthetist at University Hospitals Birmingham (UHB) and Birmingham Women’s Hospital. Her main clinical interests are obstetric anaesthesia and pre-operative assessment. Emma’s non-clinical work focuses on ways we can support each other at work. She is a trained mentor and is part of the AAGBI Mentoring Scheme.
In 2015 Emma introduced the concept of Learning from Excellence (LfE) at UHB and she is part of the LfE team at the West Midlands Patient Safety Collaborative. Learning from Excellence is a system for capturing episodes of good practice with the dual aim of improving quality and morale of staff. Emma has also completed training in Appreciative Inquiry - a strengths based organisational development tool, which complements LfE. Emma joined the Q community in 2017 and believes that quality improvement results from noticing, appreciating and learning from good practice and from helping staff to be at their best.
