Clinical Debriefing – essential learning from the clinical frontline:
Carried out well debriefing is a powerful tool to enhance our clinical practice and learn at an individual, team and organisational level. A poorly run debrief can demotivate staff and miss opportunities to learn and improve. Join us to understand why debriefing matters, and what influences the success or failure of a debrief.
ABOUT THE PRESENTER
Since my earliest days working on Patient Transport through to my current role as an Advanced Paramedic, one thing that the past 29 years have taught me is that we should always aim to improve our practice. Be that through formal education or those informal staff room debates we’ve all participated in, and even then we are never the polished, finished article. It was this pursuit of continually learning from practice that led me to examine the process of debriefing within the ambulance service as part of my MSc. in Advanced Practice; and the more I researched it was evident that as a profession we needed to improve on our current position. After writing for the British Paramedic Journal on this topic, in 2019 I was fortunate enough to be able to share my findings nationally within the UK at the College of Paramedics annual conference, and internationally at the EMS World Expo in New Orleans. The journey of learning and further improving our clinical practice through the process of debriefing should be central to all healthcare professionals, and the more we understand our practice and what influences it – then the better our patient care and outcomes.
