Blast Injury: The Science Presented by Dr. Emrys Kirkman

    DATE

    Wednesday 29th July 2020 - 8PM

    DESCRIPTION

Explosions cause injury by a variety of different mechanisms. Some (a few) are ‘special’ to blast, whilst others such as blunt and penetrating injuries can also be seen in other circumstances. This lecture looks briefly at the forces in an explosion that cause injury and describes the traditional classification of blast injury according to the forces that caused them.  It then goes on to look at examples of specific injuries and combination of injuries, their pathophysiology and finally implications for resuscitation.

    ABOUT THE PRESENTER

Dr Emrys Kirkman is a Dstl Fellow and Principal Scientist working for the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl, part of the UK Ministry of Defence) at Porton Down where he is one of two academic leads for the Combat Casualty Care research programme.  He has worked in the field of trauma since 1987 focusing on the systemic and local effects of haemorrhagic shock and resuscitation in both conventional and blast injuries.  His areas of interest include haemostasis and cardiovascular, respiratory, oxygen transport and microcirculatory changes, and related consequences such as secondary organ damage, systemic inflammation and coagulopathy.  He was awarded a Royal College of Anaesthetists’ Macintosh Professorship in 2009.  In 2016 he was awarded an OBE “for services in support of military medical treatment”.  He holds honorary senior lectureships at Durham University and Sunderland University.
